5th Grade

The PTA elects a 5th Grade Coordinator who works with the principal, the teachers and the 5th grade parents to coordinate the 5th grade activities, as follows:

  • Outdoor Ed: The San Mateo County Outdoor Education Program is offered to our 5th graders each year. The San Mateo County Office of Education in cooperation with local schools and San Francisco YMCA Camp Jones Gulch conduct this award-winning environmental education program. Since 1968, over 175,000 fifth and sixth graders have learned about the physical and social sciences as well as art and music in this residential outdoor science school. The program emphasizes experiential and interdisciplinary learning--the type of learning that involves students so much that they refer to it as fun. The children must pay to attend. Sunshine Gardens offers a small scholarship for families who need it and an opportunity for all 5th grade families to fundraiser to help reduce the cost.
  • 5th Grade Fundraisers: The 5th grade families will be asked to participate in two or more 5th grade fundraisers each year. These fundraisers help to defray the cost of Outdoor Education an pay for the 5th grade Picnic and Promotion activities. For the last several years, we have sold candy and cookie dough. The 5th grade parents generally help run these fundraisers.
  • Raging Waters: The 5th Grade trip to Raging Waters is a 5th grade tradition where the students spend a fun day at the water park. This is coordinated a chaperoned by the 5th grade parents/caretakers and teachers.  
  • 5th Grade Promotion: The promotion "ceremony" can change from year to year depending on the ideas of the principal, the 5th grade teachers, 5th grade coordinator and 5th grade parents.
